BIMM Student Radio set to make an impact

The one criticism that keeps popping up about the Irish music scene is that there is not enough avenues for artists to go to for their music to be heard. Radio stations have their Irish hours late at night and daytime radio is taken up by the bigger Irish acts and international stars leaving bloggers as one of the only suitable options to gain exposure.

Saoirse Kavanagh, a student at BIMM Dublin, is aiming to step in and lend a hand to the great pool of talent that is coming out of BIMM.

"BIMM Student Radio is an independent platform to showcase the talent flowing through all the different BIMM colleges at the moment", says Kavanagh, kicking things off with the Dublin college. "...If a band has some sort of connection to BIMM, I want to showcase that talent."

Kavanagh says that the idea came to her when she first got a car and had to listen to the radio whilst driving due to not having any means of connecting her phone to the stereo. When listening she noticed the lack of Irish artists getting airplay and that it was the same few songs repeated over and over again. "Being in BIMM I know that there is so much more out there than what is getting repeated over and over again on the radio" says Kavanagh.

Speaking on what mediums are already out there for up and coming Irish artists Kavanagh says that "there are a lot more coming around now, but there is definitely an issue there! You have things like 98fm's Totally Irish and lots of blogs that have set up in the past couple of years, but the issue definitely needs to be addressed."

The idea is to make BIMM Student Radio as broad and as varied as possible, giving a place to hear music of every genre and origin taking into account all of the BIMM colleges around the UK & Europe.

Shows will be aired on a fortnightly bases, lasting for around an hour, showcasing different artists each week along with interviews and gig guides. The station will also be uploading exclusive content on their website that will contain gig news, artist spotlights, photos from shows and the possibility of videos down the line too.
