Other Voices is right around the corner and we have decided to put together a list of our ones to watch at Other Voices 2015. First up on that list is HAWK.
HAWK are an Irish / London based alternative band that like to pen songs about topics that mean something rather than just putting together throw away lyrics. Their most recent effort, 'Once Told' sees lead singer
Julie tackling the issue of abortion in Ireland. In an interview with Flux Magazine (read here) Julie says about growing up in Ireland:
"When I was a teenager, you’d hear the occasional rumour about girls travelling to England for an abortion. It was rarely said above hushed tones, usually based on third-hand information, and always shrouded in an air of secrecy. The idea of ‘the trip to England’ – one of scandal and shame; it was just part of growing up in Ireland. An urban legend you wouldn’t repeat too loudly. It wasn’t until years later that I realised what a ridiculous and bleak set of circumstances women in Ireland were faced with."
Listen to ''Once Told' below.
Hawk are set to play The Other Room at Other Voices this year and will be sure to captivate audiences with their brand of alternative indie music and give a superb live performance to all heading down to Dingle on the 4th of December.
We have filmed session videos with a number of the acts announced for Other Voices 2015 so far, with HAWK being one of those acts. Back in April in the beautiful surroundings of Dublin's Smock Alley Theatre we met up with HAWK and they performed their song 'Clock Hand''' for The OB Sessions. Watch that video below.
