Review: Bairbre Anne – Sparks EP

Following the release of her debut EP 'Helium Heart' in 2010, Dublin born Bairbre Anne relocated to London and it was a there that she started working on her 2nd EP, 'Arrows' with producer Sean Genockey. Bairbre is now poised to release her 3rd EP on which she worked with Sean again. She says about the experience that “Over a six month period in London, we recorded two EPs worth together. Sean ‘got me’, it was a great working relationship and clearly very productive as a result!” She continued, “I was also very fortunate to have some stunning musical guests play on these recordings. Paul Brady, Steve Bowman (Counting Crows) and Jesse Wood (son of Ronnie Wood) feature on 'Sparks'.

The EP kicks off with the funky radio friendly track 'It's You'. This song has a steady baseline running throughout with an added brass section during the chorus. It is the most dance influenced song on the EP and is the first track to be released from 'Sparks'. The EP gets a tad more mellow with the minimalistic track 'Energy' which slowly lifts into a chorus of strings with feisty vocals to accompany.

'If I Only Had The Time' is one of the standout songs on the EP having a throwback feel to it in a similar vain of Alanis Morissette mixed with the vocal styling of Gabriella Cilmi. 'Dark Heart' has the familiar feel of a radio friendly keyboard led pop song but what sets it apart is the vocals of Bairbre, full of spunk and feistiness. The EP closes with title track 'Sparks' which follows in a similar vain to 'Dark Heart' providing another radio friendly pop hit this time with more emotion wrapped up within the lyrics.

Overall 'Sparks EP' showcases a few sides to Bairbre Anne with the almost dance styling of 'It's You' to the more melodramatic 'Sparks'. This gives Anne a lot of scope to move forward with her sound and truly craft a spot in her repertoire that is individual to herself.
The must hear tracks from this EP are 'It's You' and 'If I Only Had The Time'.

Bairbre will be celebrating the launch of her new EP with a live performance upstairs at The Workmans Club on Friday 5th June. You can also catch her when she guests with Paul Brady at his Vicar Street show on Sunday 17th May.
